E-learning tools recommended by the University of Silesia

The University of Silesia in Katowice recommends using two e-learning tools available for all employees. These tools are:

  • Moodle platform
  • Microsoft Teams

Please read the short software descriptions.

Teams is an Office 365 application – available for every employee and student of the University of Silesia. The main functionalities are:

  • creating a team with a dedicated group of students;
  • group or individual chat;
  • sharing files, links, presentations;
  • linking other sources and tools, such as YouTube, Trello, MindMeister, Jira, GitHub, Evernote;
  • integration with other Office 365 applications;
  • video conferences and real-time voice connections with recording and sharing options;
  • sharing files, desktop, links and presentations during video conferences;
  • notepad;
  • tasks for students with score and requirements;
  • evaluation and feedback.

Due to its multifunctionality, Teams may be a “command centre” for organising cooperation with students, thanks to integrating multiple solutions within a single tool.

Please watch the video tutorials on using Microsoft Teams.

Each Faculty at the University of Silesia currently has its own Moodle e-platform, where courses corresponding to specific class modules can be published.

If you have any questions about the platform or need some help creating courses on Moodle, write to:

Please watch the video tutorials on using Moodle platform.

Important info about Moodle

  1. The list of all platforms is available on:
  2. Use central login point to log on the platform (the same as in case of USOSWeb). You don’t have to create a special login account.
  3. Login support
  4. ATTENTION! To start creating course content, you have to switch to edit mode (in the top right corner of the platform - “gear icon -> “Switch to edit mode”)
  5. Add files (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, itp.) to the platform
  6. Add external links
  7. Add discussion forum
  8. Add page with text and graphics directly in the system
  9. Add online communication (chat)
  10. Discussion forum
  11. Access to course for students

 What can you use the platform for?
Reservoir of teaching metarsials - supporting materials (DOC, PPT, PDF and other files) are often sent to students by e-mail. This causes a lot of inconvenience. The same materials can be published on Faculty e-platforms, which ensures:

  • continuous access to these materials,
  • viewing always the latest document versions,
  • single place where students will search for new files,
  • possibility of protection against unauthorized access (course access through password)
  • control of who and when watched a document.

Space for storing projects/reports - the platform also allows for collecting materials sent by students. The advantages include:

  • single place for storing files (instead of receiving them in the e-mail inbox, and then searching for them among other e-mails),
  • trouble-free access from any location,
  • limited completion time
  • possibility to assess the materials sent,
  • sending back files to correct, comments, etc.

Sylalabus for classes - you can place there curriculum, materials and reading list.

Class register - your course may be treated as an e-register where you can:

  • evaluate sent materials, files, quizzes and reports, as well as tasks which are completed physically and not sent for the course.
  • the final grade is calculated according to (a) the selected pattern automatically, or (b) the pattern (requirements) of the course teacher, taking into consideration weights, multipliers, etc.

Closed discussion forum - if you add a discussion forum to the course, you can create closed discussion on a given topic. The posts can be mutually evaluated by students. There are several ready-made types of forums, which for example allow to show students other posts only when their own answer has been published. It is possible to restrict the number of messages and amount of time between subsequent posts published in the system.

Online communication tools (video, audio, chat) - the platform enables many forms of communication between students and teachers starting from the discussion forum, through chat (simplified version of Messenger), to video conference (audio + video). This last option also allows to view a screen or show a presentation. ATTENTION! It is currently preferred to use Microsoft Teams for e-classes (Webinars)

Tool for pre-tests/tests - the system has many options to test students’ knowledge automatically, both in the form of text and graphic questions. Most of them can be evaluated automatically without the teacher’s participation, which is very convenient for pre-tests showing how students are prepared for classes. Test grades are automatically entered in the class register. Test duration and its availability period can be limited in time.

Education support - It is possible to create a course with supporting materials in the form of documents, website links, audio and video recordings, as well as test elements (quizzes, lessons) and tasks.  Such course can be used either directly during classes, or as supporting material.

Complete e-learning course - Moodle platform enables to create a complete e-learning course, which replaces the traditional forms. In this case, instead of traditional classes, students who participate in the course gain knowledge individually by going through particular subjects, reading and watching the prepared materials, taking quizzes and performing tasks, discussing on forums, or contacting the teacher through chats or video conferences.
