FAQ - Doctoral Students

                                                                                                                                                                                                          Last update: 16 March 2020

Below are answers to the questions asked by students of the University of Silesia in Katowice. You can ask further questions using HELPDESK system (LINK).

1. How long is all international mobility suspended for? Are there plans to suspend all mobility of doctoral students under PROM project (even in August-September), regardless of the study programme?
International mobility to all destinations has been suspended until further notice. The same applies to arrivals of foreign guests at the University of Silesia. It is still not known what the situation will be like in a few months, so no decision on potential suspension of all mobility of doctoral students under PROM project has not been taken yet. We currently recommend postponing all planned mobility to the latest possible date (September) and suspending the purchase of airline tickets, etc.
2. If the current situation lasts until September, is NAWA planning to extend the settlement period of PROM project so that doctoral students can carry out their mobility at a later date, or will the travel options and granted funds be forfeited?
We still don’t know what steps will be taken by NAWA. If any information is announced, we will definitely publish it.
3. If NAWA fails to extend the settlement period, will the individuals with granted funds have to take part in a competition once more, or will funding be automatically awarded to them during the next edition of PROM?
Since it is not known yet if mobility is ultimately to be cancelled, no decisions have been taken yet.
4. Do doctoral students currently have the possibility to use laboratories at the University? Some doctoral students have not been permitted to enter the University by the security employees.
Only classes are currently suspended. Research work is continued, and doctoral students could potentially continue to carry out their work at the University. However, out of concern for the health and safety of doctoral students and employees, heads of units, deans and supervisors rather encourage everyone to reduce their visits at the University to minimum and carry out their work remotely, to the extent possible. Therefore, the decision on permission or prohibition of entry to buildings is taken by the faculty/institute authorities. In exceptional cases, when visit at the University is required, we recommend contacting the supervisors, and then, if necessary, the decision makers at the relevant Faculty.
5. Will the competition for allocation of funds at the disposal of the Doctoral Student Government end within the initially set deadline, or will the deadline for submitting applications be postponed?
The University Council of the Doctoral Student Government decided to postpone the deadline for submitting applications to 19 April 2020. Although the call for applications is executed online, the funds would probably be intended, to a large extent, to organisation or participation in conferences, research trips and other mobility programs which are currently suspended.
