Important info for students and doctoral students due to the suspension of classes at the University of Silesia in Katowice

The restrictions in operation of the University of Silesia will be effective until Ordinance no. 28 of the Rector of the University o Silesia in Katowice of 12 March 2020 on countering the spread of SARS-CoV-2 virus with further amendments (Ordinance no. 29) has been revoked.

 2. E-learning during suspension of classes 
The University of Silesia is currently preparing the offer of e-learning classes for students to replace the traditional classes. Distance learning will allow us to reduce the number of classes to be made up when the suspension period has ended. It might not be possible to shift to the e-learning mode in the case of certain classes, due to which the academic year may have to be extended. All information about distance learning will be available on the special website dedicated to e-learning.


3. Credits and exams
Winter session 2019/2020

If the Dean of your Faculty did not decide to extend the retake session automatically, the students who fail to obtain credits or pass exams and have not requested for extension of the examination session yet, will be able to do it after the end of the suspension period.

Additionally, pursuant to the Ordinance of the Rector of the University of Silesia in Katowice, exams, defense of diploma theses, meetings of committees (including doctoral and habilitation committees) can only take place in accordance with the rules established by the Dean and in line with the appropriate safety measures.

Summer session 2019/2020

The rules of credits and exams will depend on how long the state of epidemic threat and related restrictions in operation of the University will last. All information will be updated and provided on an ongoing basis.

4. Student IDs
The validity of student and doctoral student IDs has been automatically extended until 31 May - students do not have to come in person to the secretary office, pursuant to the Regulation of the Minister of Science and Higher Education of 12 March 2020 amending the regulation on studies

5. Student residence halls (dorms)
Due to the extraordinary situation caused by the spread of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, the activity of Silesian Voivodeship authorities are inevitable intended to use the student residence halls of Silesian universities as facilities for people in quarantine.

Ideally, the students who can go home, should do it as soon as possible. We will continue to provide students who cannot go home with accommodation, but please note that you may be temporarily moved to a different room, or even to a different location.

Any personal items left will be secured under supervision and deposited. If possible, please secure your property, using cardboards and bags which we will provide to anyone interested. Please contact urgently the administration of your student residence hall to arrange and plan all necessary details.

The students who left their room due to suspension of classes, leaving their personal items, will not have to pay any charges starting from 17 March 2020. The same applies to the students who had to check out due to the re-housing.

Please also remember that, following the Rector’s Ordinance, any registration of new residents in student residence halls and other residential premises of the University has been suspended. Any visits of external guests in these premises are prohibited.

7. Dean’s Offices 
Dean's Offices operate during the suspension of classes. Pursuant to the 
Ordinance of the Rector, the university administration, in agreement with Deans of Faculties, will ensure that any issues related to the course of studies, which required personal presence in the Dean’s Office, in particular requests for extension of the examination session, settlement of semester or approval of the diploma thesis subject, will be handled remotely.

In case when it is necessary to record a grade in the student record book or USOS system, the Dean’s Office will help record such grade by contacting the relevant examiner, based either on the grades entered in the USOS system, or a scan/photo of the relevant signature in the student record book sent by e-mail.

8. Foreign trips
Pursuant to the Rector’s Ordinance, any foreign travel of employees, doctoral students and students, as well as any arrivals at the University from abroad have been suspended.
